November is Elections Month

Elections time is coming up soon and the current political environment is quite distressing, with immigration agencies deporting individuals, the war in Gaza, the ups and downs of the economy and most importantly the low morale of the American public. For the first time in my life, I am entitled to vote in the presidential election in my second home, the United States of America. As an adult I followed politics based on what I watched on TV and what I discussed with other people my age, but I never paid attention to my right to cast a ballot.

During the most recent presidential elections, I desired for Kamala Harris to be a glimpse of hope for women, particularly for minority women like me. This desire and hope turned into a nightmare as Donald Trump won and became someone who rules with hard and incomprehensible policies. Perhaps he was what the country needed to reconsider what type of people we are choosing for our government, to realize that we cannot trust those who are in leadership to represent us adequately.

In the year 2016, I purchased two books, one was about Democrat Hillary Clinton, and the second one was about Donald Trump. While I was truly impressed with Hillary’s career as a diplomat, I was also unaware as to where Mr. Trump came from. I was impressed with his potential for business and his development into a politician. However, I never came to realize what a downfall it would be for the United States for someone like him to have the authority and the power that he has. The detriment that the current president has brought to the world is very upsetting as I see my life being affected by his policies.

I live in a society where we should all be able to freely speak, think, express ourselves, but those rights are being taken away by the people that have been chosen to guide us during times of turmoil and darkness. Gaza has opened my eyes to see that there are no rules in life, people can twist events in a way that is inhumane, and to say the least very upsetting and wrong. There are things that go unsaid because there are no words to state the obvious if someone does not want to see the reality.

Walking down a path this morning and admiring the sunrise, something that I have been able to enjoy recently, I realized how blessed I am to be alive during these times of turmoil and war at home and abroad. I believe that in the future there may be hope for some people who currently suffer at the hands of those in power, but the damage is done, and when that happens, societies break and they become obsolete.

I want to cast my vote in November to elect a new president, looking for a candidate who can provide better outcomes for our communities, helping people in need and assisting in the progress of better policies that include everyone, nobody should be left behind. The world revolves in circles and those circles come and go, who knows when it will be our time to struggle and we could need a helping hand to overcome obstacles.
